Juggling

Avery impressed us with her newly discovered juggling skills this week:

In other news... We've hit the halfway mark!

20 weeks down, 20 to go until we meet our little [still nameless] guy!

Weekend Recap

A quick recap of our weekend...

Josh and me [sucking in my unsightly bump] at his end of year FEMBA banquet for UCI.  He received a special cord that he will wear at commencement in a few weeks for graduating in the top 20% of the class. I was so proud of him!

Saturday at Little Lizzy's Quinceanera (15th birthday).

And later that evening at Auntie Jennifer and Dan's engagement party.
Avery made some friends and was quite content and well-behaved.
(If we leave out the part where she ate part of an oatmeal cookie, choked on the raisins and puked on the carpet).

And of course, Sunday morning dance class:

Mother's Day

We spent Mother's Day at Crystal Cove. It was a little on the cool and breezy side, but pretty and relaxing.  Well, for most of us anyway...

Avery was so excited about bringing her bucket and shovels to the beach and "digging for treasure," that she completely forgot how much she hates being dirty. The second her feet touched the sand, her joy turned to horror and she stood there paralyzed, asking for someone to carry her.  She spent the entire afternoon glued to her towel like it was an island in the middle of shark-infested waters, fenced with electrical barbed wire. She didn't even attempt to get up or set one single toe into the sand, despite our encouragement.  Josh noted that Avery is "too neurotic to take to the beach."

Eventually we got her to lean off of the towel to use her shovels, but if any amount of sand got on her hands, I was immediately alerted with a "Mommy! You clean me?"

Somewhere around the 2 hour mark, Josh took her down to the water. Apparently excitement of water trumps fear of sand, so she temporarily forgot about being "dirty" and enjoyed her toes in the surf.

Meanwhile....

The rest of us were distracted by a baby Elephant Seal that was in the process of beaching itself about 20 yards away from us.

My mom immediately went to talk to the lifeguard. He informed her that it was "probably dying" and that many seals have been beaching themselves and dying on the beach. (Just what she wanted to hear, and on Mother's Day no less).  Since the rescue centers are full to capacity right now, he didn't see any sense in calling a wildlife rescue team.  Luckily, my mom kept pushing to have someone at least come out and give the poor thing an assessment.

After what seemed like ages, the Pacific Marine Mammal Center rescue team showed up.

And yesterday they posted "Mama's Boy" on their inpatient list (which you can see by clicking this link. He is at the bottom):

Looks like he is going to be okay after all!

Once the very sad seal was out of sight, we turned our attention towards Uncle Braedon, who was being covered in goldfish crackers by Uncle Aaron in order to lure the seagulls to attack him and make for a hilarious photo op.

Unfortunately it never quite happened as we had hoped, but it was funny anyway...

Big Girl Bed

The milestones seem to keep passing so quickly...
Avery now has a big girl bed!

Our adventure started earlier this week.
I had ordered the bed online, and when the box arrived at my office, it was huge! Not only about 8 feet long, but 117 pounds. My plan to bring it home in Josh's car was not going to work, so I had to borrow a work truck. The truck doesn't look huge from the outside, but when you're used to navigating a little Corolla, driving the Ford F-250 Super Duty with a rack feels like maneuvering a big rig. I found the experience to be more than a little terrifying, but Avery the truck-lover was ecstatic!  She told me on the way home that she wanted to do construction. I asked her what she wanted to build,
and she said, "Ummm.... a big girl bed!"
Good answer.

Being that I'm pregnant, had a toddler in tow, was in a "No parking" zone and Josh was at school when I arrived home, I was pretty proud of myself for quickly unloading the entire bed in front of the garage, piece by piece without any damage, and reparking the truck out on the curb.  When Josh got home, he was surprised that I had also managed to get all the parts of the bed upstairs.

Later in the week he picked up the mattress, so this morning we were ready for assembly.  It was a little weird to think that last night was going to be Avery's last night ever in a crib. I will miss coming into her room in the morning and finding her sitting quietly in the middle of it, or holding onto the side and anxiously awaiting our entrance (which always makes her jump up and down).

Before we disassembled the crib and packed away her "baby room" forever, there was just one more thing I had to do:

And... Voila!  Our baby is officially a "big girl."

I have been so fearful of this change, as she has been such a perfect sleeper and I have been worrying and anticipating that taking away the security of her crib would completely disrupt her sleep schedule.  I have heard "horror stories" from other parents about all the crazy tricks they had to pull to get their toddler to stay in bed.

Presently, my little angel is sound asleep, taking her very first nap in the bed, without so much as a peep. Don't know what I was so worried about!

Next stop.... Potty training!

Apple's Youngest Fan

First, a couple random pictures...

Excitement over the new princess romper and sandals from Gammy:

Storytime with Gammy and the babies:

And Avery's pouting becoming contagious at dance class:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the two short weeks that we have had an iPad and iPhones, Avery has become a master.  Actually she was a master of the iPad after about one day.

We have downloaded multiple games/apps for her to use. She knows how to navigate out of a game, go back to the menu, and select another game. She also knows how to unlock the screen, and put in the four digit passcode on the iPad, and she knows that if she opens any other apps besides the ones she is allowed to use, that the device gets taken away.  So she has gotten very good about staying out of my calendar and contacts.

Earlier this week I discovered that if she is playing a game and gets to a point in the game she doesn't like (or that is too challenging for her), she just goes out to the menu and starts the game over again to avoid doing the part she doesn't want to do.
I was shocked, because I did NOT teach her how to do that!

Here is something else I did NOT teach her:

Park Day

Some pictures from Avery's Great-Grandma's 83rd birthday party in the park on Sunday...
